The Upanishads, the most ancient of which-and the most interesting too with regard to the subject before us-go back to the last centuries before the Christian era, reflect all the phases of that slow philosophic evolution that has its source in the Vedas, runs through the whole middle age of India, and ends in the kind of pantheistic idealism that brings us down to the threshold of modern times.
