Ecology has come to play an increasingly important, sometimes central, role in natural resource management. The problems to be addressed are diverse, but common are two particular factors that present ecologists with aparticularly strong challenge: complexity and scale. Theinherent complexity of ecosystems has long been recognizedby ecologists (Bradbury et al., 1996; Shugart,1998). Ecosystems consist of large numbers of species, each cycling through patterns of births and deaths as in dividual organisms interact with one anther via processes such as competition and predation. At the sametime, these biotic processes (births, deaths and interactions)are themselves affected by the physical environment; factors such as resource supply rates (nutrients, water, habitat, etc.) as well as punctuated (often unpredictable)‘disturbance’ events such as floods, fires and storms, which can induce sudden and dramatic changes to the biota. These interactions occur over different spatialand temporal scales depending on the mobility and longevity of the organisms involved (Wiens and Milne,1989; Mac Nally, 1999), but played out in real land scapes, such as in forests and oceans, these scales can be large. Likewise, management decisions are often based
on outcomes across large spatial scales. Consequently,in areas of applied research and management, ecologistsare (quite reasonably) now being asked to address large-scale questions directly.
