The recent 14th Summit in Hua Hin, the first under the new
Charter, has also reaffirmed this commitment to make ASEAN truly a 'People's
Centered Organization'. But, if the ASCC objective is to be achieved, a higher
level of sustained follow-up commitment directed at particularly students and the
general populace through ASEAN-wide 'public diplomacy' campaigns,
educational, cultural, sports, tourism, media, entertainment, and other exchanges
to inculcate, nurture, and build a common regional identity is therefore
imperative. To be sure, currently there exist a number of ASEAN-wide culture-based
initiatives in this direction.
