a. Self-Awareness: Awareness of our feelings is a first and necessary step whereby we are conscious of our feelings and are able to identify them for what they truly are. It may not be possible to be aware of all the subtle feelings we experience on a regular basis. But we should at least become aware of and identify the strong feelings that certain experiences generate. Some persons are more aware of their feelings while others do not easily perceive their inner reactions. Different techniques can be used to confront our defense mechanisms and bring about greater self-awareness. This process should be gradual because sudden release of pent-up emotions may overwhelm or cause other forms of regressive behaviours.
