Many progressive organizations rely on communities of practice to
maintain the professional excellence of project teams regardless of where the
members of the team may be geographically located. Because communities
of practice facilitate knowledge sharing they are critical to overcoming
the challenges involved in the creation, sharing, dissemination and use of
knowledge. An excellent example of this is the experience at the World Bank.
Among the primary objectives of the World Bank is the reduction of poverty.
It tries to attain this objective with money (e.g., through loans and grants to
governments) and knowledge (e.g., through relevant publications, training,
workshops and the like). In this connection, the World Bank uses communities of practice in various fields in order to enhance its expertise in areas that are important to developing countries, for example, in water resources
development, environmental protection or energy supply and generation.
