I end this lesson with a return to the inspirational geometer by discussing the Platonic solids. These polyhedral have congruent regular polygons for each. Plato believed that the five elements-earth, water, air, fire, and ether-were constructed of these basic solids. The mystical history of these solids is enriched when students see that when they are placed on the overhead projector, each of the five solids casts the same shadow, regardless of the face on which it is placed.
