Knowledge and attitudes toward different closures. In
general, most participants believed alternative closures to
natural cork are used because they are less expensive
than natural cork (Table 7). Only a moderate number believed
synthetic corks could prevent wine spoilage and a
lower number believed screwcaps could prevent wine
spoilage or preserve wine better. Also, more participants
(72%) believed synthetic corks were acceptable substitutes
for natural cork, whereas less (20%) believed screwcaps
were acceptable. Consumer attitudes toward alternative
closures are consistent with their beliefs related to the
quality of wine with the different closures (Table 8). Most
consumers would buy wine or would accept wine in a restaurant
with a synthetic cork. However, fewer consumers
would buy wine with a screwcap and the majority said
they would be disappointed at a restaurant if wine served
had a screwcap.
