Recent epidemiologic data have implicated infection with HPV in the pathogenesis of head and neck cancers, although this is still being elucidated, and mortality is strongly related to early detection.[16]Although the American Cancer Society recommends annual oral cancer screenings for people 40 or older,[10] Macek et al found that only 20.1% of adults report having received an oral cancer examination in their lifetime. These researchers further said the population at greatest risk of developing oral cancer is more likely to visit a primary care practitioner than a dentist.[17]
