The animals used were de-wormed (Levamisole oxyclozanide
(3%) +cobalt (Nilzan plus ®): Coopers, Kenya Ltd) and sprayed for
ecto-parasites (Amitraz (Triatix®): Coopers, Kenya Ltd) on arrival for
experimentation. They had access to mineral lick (Mac Lick Super®:
Coopers, Kenya Ltd). They were allowed 3 weeks in captivity before
being used in the experiments. This preliminary period was sufficient
for the animals to adapt to captivity and experimental diets as
well as confinement in metabolic cages. A ten days rest period was
allowed between experiments.
