In general, when considering the deployment of a local area layer it is important to understand and take into account the differences in terms of characteristics and limitations of such a deployment, compared to a conventional macrolayer deployment. As an example, although low deployment and operational costs, and low energy consumption are important characteristics in general, these aspects should be further emphasized for local area access deployments. The reason is the large number of network nodes in such deployments and the typically low average load/usage per node, underlining the importance of low energy consumption when no users are served by a network node. The large number of nodes also calls for highly automated ways of operating and monitoring the network in order to limit the operational cost.
