An oxbow in the making: meanders and sandbank deposition on the Nowitna River, Alaska. Eventually, the two sections of the river at the bottom of the meander break through the bank between them and create a new, straighter course. A new river bank accumulates, and leaves behind an oxbow lake to join the others that can be seen around the river.
