Shortly after the change, obstetricians began to verbally
report a perceived increase in postpartum hemorrhage. This
was attributed to the decrease postpartum oxytocin dose
from 40 units to 30 units. The subjective impression of the
obstetricians was that a postpartum dose of 30 units of
oxytocin was insufficient and was causing an increase in the
rate of postpartum hemorrhage. The purpose of this study
was to evaluate a balancingmeasure of a quality improvement
initiative to standardize the dosing of oxytocin; namely,
whether there was an unanticipated consequence of an
increase in postpartum hemorrhage.
