dismiss the possibility of serious risks arising from the
application of genetic modification (Scholderer, Balderjahn,
& Will, 1998). Other critical aspects raised in the
public debate are ethical issues, the right to choose, and
general issues about the industrialization of food production.
Especially the latter aspect is important, as we
are reminded that the discussion about genetic modification
is not an isolated phenomenon. Consumers
have earlier been concerned about irradiation, and we
do not know how they will react to new upcoming
technologies like magnetic field treatment and high-pressure
conservation. The research done on consumer attitudes
towards genetic modification in food production
may pave the way for a better understanding of the consumer
interest in the technologies used to produce food.
