Structures of patriarchy are
deep-seated and women in traditional societies like India often
lack a perception of self-interest and can acquiesce in their
own subordination (Sen, 1990) although others have argued
that it is more of a survival strategy that stems from their
inability to act overtly in their best interests (Agarwal,
2006). Women are also reluctant to participate in collective
action around an issue that is traditionally perceived as men’s
prerogative (Panda, 2006).
