We used the Roma Pass to get into the Colosseum for free and additionally got a guided tour which provided access to newly opened underground areas of the arena. We got there about 35 minutes prior to the start of our tour, getting in the right line and through security didn't take long. Granted this was all at 9-920am. Our tour guide said that the Colosseum and the Roman forum tend to become super crowded after 930, so maybe we just missed the rush? Our tour guide was maybe 5 minutes late. She was extremely knowledgeable and personable. We had ample time for questions and photos. We were able to go see certain underground areas. We even got to walk on the actual floor the gladiators did, pretty cool in my opinion. We were also able to ascend up to a higher level of the arena than the general public could, which had a stunning view. I would definitely recommend getting this tour as the additional above and below ground views are not to be missed! I would also recommend early tours to avoid the chaos and long lines through security.
