In this paper, an objechve concept analysis was undertaken to examme the
athibutes, daracterishcs and uses of the concept of anpowerment A review
of the bterature and selected empmcal r^erents mdicated that anpowerment
IS a complex and multi-dimensional concrept Withm a nursmg context,
empowermott can be conceptualized as a composite of (a) attnbutes that relate
to the client, (b) attnbutes that relate to the nurse, and (c) attributes that belong
to both the client ami the ntirse In a broad sense, empowerment is a prcxress of
helping people to assert control over the factors which affect their lives This
process encompasses both the mdividual responsibihty m health care and the
broado- mshtuhonal, orgamzahonal or scxaetal responsibihhes m enabling people
to assume responsibility for their own health. Antecedents to and consequences
of empowermoit, from a nursmg porspechve, are presented. To adopt truly an
empowerment model in nursmg, a r»iical paracbgm shift is rweded. Hie final
condusion is that this concept has great utility for nursmg practice, educahon,
admmistrahon and research
