Black Hills Power owns 35% interest in a Converter Station Site and South Rapid City
Interconnection (the transmission tie) that provides an interconnection between the Western and
Eastern transmission grids, enabling the company access to both the Western Electricity Coordinating
Council (WECC) region in the west, and the Mid-Continent Area Power Pool (MAPP) region in the
east, of the US. The Black Hills Power system is located in the WECC region. The total transfer
capacity of the tie is 400 MW–200 MW from West to East and 200 MW from East to West. Moreover,
more than 70% of the company’s utilities infrastructure is automatic meter reading and advanced
metering infrastructure-enabled, which further strengthens its infrastructure base.
