Electron transport systems to Mn(IV) have been investigated in several
Bacillus species that reduce Mn(IV) (27, 31, 36). However, the available
evidence suggests that this Mn(IV) reduction is a minor side reaction that
does not conserve energy to support growth for these organisms, and thus this
metabolism may have little relevance to the bulk of dissimilatory Mn(IV)
reduction in sedimentary environments
