In recent years, the emergent yeasts resistance to classical antifungals
prompted the study of new drugs and pharmaceutical
formulations for the management of Candida infections [1]. Chitosan,
a natural polymer resulting from the deacetylation of chitin,
has been proposed for pharmaceutical application. Its non-toxic,
mucoadhesive, biodegradable and biocompatible characteristics
enhance the bioactive and antimicrobial activity of chitosan [2,3].
It has been shown that chitosan can be extremely active against
a wide range of microorganisms [4–6]. However, its mechanism
of action is not yet clear. The effect of chitosan on microorganism
growth appears to be related to the ionic interactions between
the protonated amino groups in solution and the negative charges
on microorganisms cell surface [3,4,6]. There have been attempts
at clarifying the mechanisms of action against different bacteria
