The scouting movement can be traced back to the early 20th Century. British army officer, Robert Baden Powell, and his unit were trapped in the small African town of Mafeking during the Boer War. If it hadn’t been for the help of a group of local youngsters known as the Mafeking Cadet Corps who carried messages to the rest of the British army, Baden Powell and his troops would have almost definitely been overrun. Inspired by the courage and unity of these young boys, Baden – Powell decided to do something similar for young boys at home and in 1907, upon his return to England, he formed the boy scout movement.
