The bias estimates presented in Table 2 were computed
in two cases, using or not the ocean dynamics correction, in
order to evaluate its impact on the results. The estimation
obtained by the OCA team is also indicated. Because they
do the comparison in the first tens of kilometres from the
coast, this team does not consider the ocean dynamics correction,
assuming that it does not change a lot at this distance.
When no ocean dynamics correction is used in the
regional method, the results obtained by NOVELTIS and
the OCA are very close, both in terms of mean and variability
of the bias. It should be noticed that, due to different
data editing strategies, the numbers of cycles used to compute
the bias are different from one team to the other. In
particular, the strategy developed by NOVELTIS does
not eliminate the cycles presenting sigma bloom events.
This choice may have an impact on the SSH quality near
the coast and thus on the absolute bias. It is consequently
one of the possible improvements that could be implemented
in the method.
