“Animals” was originally released as a white label, with no name on it. Whose idea was that and what was the thinking behind it?
I actually came up with the idea, because I was curious what the reaction would be if it was a white label; if people would still think it’s good. Then when it came online there was lots of speculation about the “real artist.” We just posted it online as a white label, then people started speculating. They thought it was Tiësto or Calvin Harris and they came up with Hardwell, then they came up with GTA.
Someone posted a longer version from “Animals,” just an edit he made himself, online: “Hardwell and GTA – Animals.” That one went viral because somebody posted on the video [saying], “Yeah, it’s from Hardwell and GTA, here’s the full version!” From that point everybody thought it was from Hardwell and GTA, and it was pretty hard for me to keep to myself that I made it. But we just waited till the right moment to announce it: “I am behind that track!”
What was it like when you announced it? What was the initial reaction from people, that someone they’d never heard of was behind this thing?
Some people thought that I stole it from Hardwell, but now it’s all fixed. But they were really fucking surprised. They were like, “What the fuck? Bullshit!” or they were like “Is this serious?”
There were some really cool reactions like, “Oh my God, I fucking love him already.” People expected it to be from two really big names like GTA and Hardwell, then suddenly it was really surprising for them that a young kid made the track.
