Aqueous extraction eliminates the problems associates with the
use of organic solvents, and possibly improves the oil quality.
However, aqueous extraction has certain limitations. Due to the
low solubility of oil in water efficiency of aqueous extraction is
lower compared to hexane extraction. A de-emulsification step is
required to separate the oil and an aqueous effluent is produced
which requires further treatment. Therefore, determination
of optimum operating conditions for aqueous extraction
is important.
