The patient in our reported case was younger than 60
years old, and had a bicuspid aortic valve and diabetes
mellitus. These features were compatible with the study
findings of the present review. We found Salmonella prosthetic
valve endocarditis increased with advanced age, and
most patients with Salmonella endocarditis had preexisting
valvular abnormalities. Another common underlying disease
of these patients was diabetes mellitus, especially in the
NTS group. However, of the five cases of S. typhi/S. paratyphi
endocarditis, three patients had no underlying disease,
and their mean age was younger than patients with
NTS endocarditis, which is suggestive of the invasiveness of
S. typhi/S. paratyphi infections.
