The Ghost at the Trial
Chapter 1:
My name is George Fotherley. I’m working and living in London. My apartment is in Piccadilly Street and there are seven rooms; three rooms are in front of the building which includes sitting room, bedroom and dressing room. I can look the Piccadilly Street from the window of these three rooms. However, the other four rooms are at the back of my apartment where you cannot see the outside. They include dining room, kitchen, bathroom and servant’s bedroom. I live with my servant calls john Derrick and his wife.
Tuesday morning, I was reading a newspaper about “HORRIBLE MURDER IN WEST LONDON”. The news was about the murdered in the West London who kiss the victim at his own bedroom with a knife. The news was so real that I felt I was in the situation.
After a while I looked outside my window and I saw two men on the street walking very fast. Suddenly, the first man stopped walking and looked at me. His face was very frightened. Soon later, the second man who walked followed the first man also stopped and looked at me then he said “Remember me! Help me”. I though the second man has such a pale face.
Three days later, some policemen can arrest a man. The accused man was a friend of the victim. I soon forgot about the murder news but would never forget about the two men outside my window.
Chapter 2:
One Evening in November, I planned to sleep early as I have an important job to do tomorrow morning. Before go to bed, while I were talking to John Derrick I heard a noise behind John Derrick. Suddenly the door from my dressing room is opened and there was a man standing in there. I remembered he was a pale man who I saw from my window two months ago. I quickly ran into the door but the pale man disappeared.
Next morning, I received a letter from Law Courts which inviting me to be one of the member of the jury in a trial. I therefore made my way to the Old Bailey courts at ten o’clock.
Chapter 3:
After arrived at the court, I realized that I would be responsible for a trial of murder. It’s about a man had been accused of the murder of his friend. Now I remembered that it was the one on the newspaper I read earlier.
I was sitting in the courtroom with nineteen other men. Twelve of us were going to be the members if the jury in this murder trial. Soon the police man brought the accused man into the court and I also remembered he was the guy with frightened face I saw in Piccadilly Street. After that, the judge talked with the accused man and our nineteen other men in the courts room to choose the twelve members of the jury. Eventually I got picked to be a foreman. There are many witnesses were telling the story to support case and evidences provided.
On the last two days, the lawyers said this man killed his friend. But the lawyer for defense said the man didn’t kill his friend. During the conversation, I realized there were thirteen members in this jury and supposed to be twelve. This happened twice in the morning and once again in the afternoon. Anyhow all of the jury have to stay overnight together means no one could leave the place.
Chapter 4:
During the night I couldn’t sleep. So I went to talk to Mr. Harker, a police man. I suddenly saw a man figure and I remembered that this face is the pale man from Piccadilly. The figure walked to each bed to look before disappeared.
The next morning, all members of jury had dreamt about the murdered man. However, Mr. Harker and I did not have a dream.
The fourth day, we were sitting together at the London Tavern. Eight members agreed that the accused man is the murderer while the three were disagreed with the idea. Suddenly I saw the Pale Man was pointing to the three disagreed men and looked at me before disappeared.
Chapter 5:
On the fifth day of the trial, the lawyer brought a picture of victim. After I took a look, the picture of the victim was a Pale Man. This reminded me of the two men in Piccadilly Street clearly.
On the Sixth day, there were many arguments about the victim.
On the Seventh day, I saw a Pale Man in the courtroom for the first time. I now realized that the Pale Man was the thirteenth member who I saw a few times previously. The ghost of Pale Man came to the court every day and always looked very sad.
On the tenth day, the lawyer made the final speech that the accused man is not a murderer. The victim killed himself. After this, the Pale Man looked at me and trying to tell that it is impossible that I killed myself.
On the eleventh day, nine members still believed that the accused man was a murderer. Suddenly I saw a Pale Man again and somehow I said to everyone that the victim did not kill himself. Then I persuaded the three members who never believed to believe me. Eventually, all members agreed with me that the victim did not kill himself.
Tomorrow morning I concluded to the judge the accused man is a murderer and he killed his friend. The judge therefore made the final judgment and punished the accused man by hanging him with a rope.
