Because the communication scales were substantially related, we decided to construct an
overall content-related communication scale. The scale was operationalized by the sum of
the scores on the 24 communication items. The total scale showed high reliability
(alpha ¼ .92).
In addition to the content-related communication measures, we used three attitudinal
measures that are commonly used in organizational research and that reflect the
participants’ attitudes towards their job and organization, i.e., job satisfaction,
organizational identification and turnover intentions
