Initial assessment by the ED triage nurse
revealed tachypnoea, with a respiratory
rate of 28 breaths per minute, oxygen
saturations of 94 per cent in air, tachycardia
with a heart rate of 110 beats per minute,
and a temperature of 38.6°C, indicating
that the boy was febrile. Chest auscultation
revealed decreased air entry into right
lung base. This was confirmed by an
ED registrar.
