With the remake of The Great Gatsby coming out later this year a few designers decided to pay homage to the roaring 20s and its art deco inspired fashion. Including none other than Ralph Lauren, who was the costume designer for the original 1974 Gatsby movie. The 1920s were all about rebellion against the conventionalism of the rigid Victorian era and prohibition. The necklines dropped and the hemlines were on the rise. For the first time ever women began to dress with a hint of masculinity, but some women also chose to show a little more skin. The flapper dress was very popular with its sack like silhouette and drop waist but it was not the only style worn by women. Post WWI era fashion was also very sexy and elegant with women opting for beautifully draped gowns and chemises that matched their cloche hats.
Fashion brands like Ralph Lauren, Rachel Zoe, and The Row opted for art deco inspired fashions on their Spring 2012 runways. Whether it was the use of geometric shapes that reminded you of the art deco jewelry and bejeweled necklines and hems of the 1920s or the drop waist sleek silhouette of the flapper dress, Daisy Buchanan would have surely been on the front row of each show.
The drop waist silhouette is not for everyone but if you are inspired at all by art deco or the 1920s you can always try carrying a beaded handbag or sport some art deco inspired jewelry like House of Harlow’s sunburst necklaces.
