In the etymology of other toponyms that originate from deforestation, the act of slashing is
emphasised: for example the Swiss German Schwendi, derived from Old German swenden [to
droop, to bring to fall] and Ru¨ti, derived from Old German riuten [to stub]. In Italian thereare the expressions cesina [cut], runc, fratta [to hoe, to stub] and in Old French essart [to
hoe].38 In other cases, such as the Ru¨ttibrennen in the Black Forest, both aspects are combined
in the same name.
