Wherever possible, gears are enclosed, but it is not always practicable or economic to provide housings for gears. With open gears, many of which are outdoors and exposed to all weathers, certain systems of lubrication cannot normally be used, particularly those involving oil circulation or the use of oils of relatively low viscosity, which would be flung off the gears.
