The cultural context determines the beliefs, myths, norms, ideals, and expectations that a person internalizes concerning personal relationships. Script theory stems from a social construction framework; sexual scripts are internalized codes arising from cultural scenarios and interpersonal interactions defining desirable and appropriate sexual desires and behaviors (Carpenter, 1998). Internalized cultural scripts concerning romance, love, and sexuality then influence behavior both consciously and unconsciously (Dดıaz, 1998; Gagnon, 1990; Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, & Michaels, 1994; Simon & Gagnon, 1987).Exploration of cultural scripts that operate for Latino gay men could yield valuable insights for the design of prevention programs.
