FIREARMS & TOOLMARKS (Ballistics & Trace)
Issue of GSR work in same unit as test firing weapons, although they exercise significant QC to manage that risk
Reporting in this difficult area appeared objective and reasonable
Training manuals need further attention to fully cover detailed assessment & authorisation steps
Overlap with trace evidence work of Forensic Chemistry in explosive residues, fibres and some fuels analysis due to instrumentation use and availability between this unit and FC
Opportunity to overcome this service overlap and address GSR contamination risks (by possibly restructuring these units)
Further documentation needed for sampling, computer access control
Attention to ensure all necessary proficiency tests are undertaken
