Na Bolom remains today a nonprofit organization that
offers limited lodging facilities, an extensive library, and photo archives of
Chiapas. Recently, Na Bolom has expanded into the areas of ecotourism to
the Lacandon rain forest and cultural tours of the Lacandon Indians. The
staff at Na Bolom is concerned that ecotourism may help save the rain forest
but also destroy the culture of the Lacandon.
The Lacandon are the last remaining direct descendants of the Maya.
Since the Spaniards never conquered the Lacandon, the Lacandon provides
the best insights into the great Mayan culture. Their culture is intertwined
with the rain forest, as their food, shelter, and clothing have been made or
grown in the jungle for centuries.
Years of tradition and isolation have left the Lacandon defenseless
against the influx of tourists and Western ideas. Realizing that total isolation
is no longer a possibility, Na Bolom is developing transition strategies
that would provide a key to the Lacandon survival.
