Apolygus lucorum (Meyer-Dür) (Hemiptera: Miridae) was
a significant pest of cotton in northern China through the 1950’s but
over the last half century, concomitant with the broad use of
synthetic insecticides against lepidopteran pests, population
densities have remained low (Jiang et al., 2005). However, since the
commercial release of Bt cotton in 1997, its pest status has changed.
Feeding by nymphs and adults causes stunting of plants, as well as
the abscission of squares and bolls, resulting in considerable losses
in both yield and quality (Wu et al., 2002; Wu and Guo, 2005; Lu
et al., 2007, 2010a; Lu and Wu, 2008). Therefore, we undertook
a study to determine whether the increase in populations was
directly related to a higher performance of this pest on transgenic
than on non-transgenic cotton cultivars. We did this by comparing
