Encourage government-funded research projects to develop clean electric transportation methods to help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Today, Americans use 384 billion gallons of oil per day for transportation alone (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2010) and considering that every gallon of gasoline produces 19 pounds of carbon dioxide (Engber, 2006), that results in the production of 7.3 trillion pounds of carbon dioxide every day. Converting to electric vehicles will also help to eliminate the production of other unwanted by products such as sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. In addition, because electricity can be generated through many different methods, the transition to electrically-driven vehicles will present greater flexibility in the ways power can be obtained for use in transportation.
