Maier (1999) and Burke and Nelson (1998) propose that sex-role stereotypes can sometimes work to men’s disadvantage as well, especially when their behaviors contradict the stereotype. Men who show too much emotion, for example, may be considered “soft,” or not tough enough. In addition, stereotypical behaviors carried to extremes can have detrimental results. Stereotypical masculine attributes include physical and emotional strength, courage, intellect, and dedication. Some men, however, work too hard become isolated from others, and yet try to maintain a façade that all is well. In addition, living up to the requirements of the masculine stereotype as a whole is difficult, often leading to feelings of failure.
