It was one of six major airline corporations that were formed as a result of the break up of CAAC's airline operations. It initially operated a fleet of Airbus A300, McDonnell-Douglas MD-80, MD-90 and, later, Airbus A321 aircraft. It operated predominantly domestic destinations and also to North Korea, South Korea and Japan.
