Results indicate
that DS companies invest 50% more than NODS in research and development
and 18% of them invest over 7% of their sales, while only 3%
of the NODS firms do so.
Open innovation is related to investment and company openness to
receive inputs from both inside and outside the organization in its innovation
processes (Baker et al., 2008; Chesbrough, 2003; Skarzynski &
Gibson, 2008). To measure open innovation this research focused on
company's relationship to academic organizations. Agribusiness firms
implementing a DS relate to academic institutions more intensively
than NODS firms. When only taking firms that combine internships
and research in their relationship with academic institutions, DS firms
exceed 100% NODS firms. Grupo Britt N.V. is a Curacao based food
and retailing company with operations in fourteen countries of the
Americas. The company supports innovation from the CEO's office
through their quality policy, has an innovation head reporting to
the CEO and established formal products and processes development
system embedded in the culture of the organization and counting
with a systematic intervention of external sources that allow them to
constantly think in new forms of innovation.
