What is a sample? A sample is a subset of a population. Let’s say that your community
is hoping to identify the barriers preventing parents from enrolling their children in existing OST
programs, and to do this, it plans to get information from local parents. In some communities
where there is a very small population of parents, it may be possible to include the entire
population of parents in the study (i.e., a census). In most communities, however, it would be
prohibitively time-consuming and unnecessary to identify and interview every parent. Rather
than interviewing the entire population of parents, you can interview a sample: that is, a portion
or subset of the population of parents.
