The assessment and management of pain are clinical care priorities at CHOP: thus, a Pain resource nurse (PRN) program was developed similar in scope to that reported by Paice et al. (20061. The purpose of the hospital-wide group was to enhance the knowledge and skills of nurses in pediatric pain management and improve the quality of pain care for patients. Clinical bedside nurses with interest in pain management from each patient care area (inpatient or outpatient) volunteered or were selected by nurse managers. PRNs meet on a monthly basis to discuss clinical challenges in pain management, share best practices, aim review current literature to consider application into practice (Jones el al. 2011).
