Across all locations, rates of leaf loss were low, with shoots losing
14.27 mm2 shoot1 day1, on average, in both caged and uncaged
treatments (Fig. 2a). The effect of caging on the rate of leaf
loss was only significant at the Sunshine site, where uncaged treatments
lost more leaf area than caged treatments (a significant caging
by location interaction, Fig. 2a, Table 1). There was no
significant difference in leaf loss between the warm and control
locations (a non significant interaction between caging and impact
vs. control factors, Table 1). The average loss of biomass was
0.68 mg DW shoot1 day1 over all locations, with the same differences
between treatments as observed for leaf area (Table S1).
