The Buri Ram provincial commerce office and the branch office of the Internal Trde Department in cooperation with 30 sawmills will open markets in the province during December 9-11 to buy paddy from farmers at two baht per kilogramme higher than market price. The move is in reponse to complaints in this northeastern province that middlemen have suppressed the price of their grains to between 9-10 baht per kilogramme claiming that their paddy has high humidity following widespread rains last week. Mr Somparn Nilanont, a farmer in Tambon Ban Yang, Muang district, told the media that they would like the government to step in to buy their grains at between 14-15 baht/kg which will cover their production costs plus a modest profit. He said that farmers would have to bear the costs of fertilizer, plant seeds, land ploughing and harvesting.
