The stars,however,are only one of many components of the galaxy, and the expansion of astronomy into other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum has provided views of these other components. The infrared image of the galaxy shown in Figure 22.2,for instance, is much thinner than the visible view and mostly shows us emission from intersteller dust.
