Oxygen not associated with pressure support is frequently delivered through several different techniques, including head hood, nasal cannula, face mask or “free flow,” and “flooding” the incubator. Selection of a method is often a matter of style and training. Although delivery of oxygen to nonventilated neonated is very common, the literature contains few comparisons of these different techniqures. A brief description and discussion of the common techniques follow. A summary of nursing care considerations for infants receiving supplemental oxygen concludes the article.
