Postnatal visits focused on infant care, such as signs of illness, temperature taking, communication, and motherinfant interaction, including responding to cues, household safety, emotional and cognitive development, and follow-up care. This model was developed as an adjunct to regular prenatal care. Outcomes included decreased maternal smoking, reduced birth of preterm infants, improved birth weight, and decreased child abuse. Because of the success of this model, it is being implemented in a variety of cities across the United States.
