The effects of salt on conventional biological treatment
cultures
One of the first experiments on the effects of salt on
wastewater treatment organisms was conducted by
Zobell et al. (1937). In this research, dilutions of
water collected from the Great Salt Lake in Utah
were used to prepare agar plates which were inoculated
with organisms from the domestic sewage, soil
and other sources. None of the sewage organisms and
less than 1% of the soil bacteria survived in full
strength lake water (at that time 28% salt). Higher
