This study indicates that the consumption of omega-3 fatty acid
among patients with DN was associated with decreases in circulating
levels of serum triglycerides and VLDL-cholesterol compared
with placebo, but did not influence other lipid subfractions. Supporting
this study, omega-3 fatty acid administration from flaxseed
and fish oils significantly decreased triglycerides concentrations
among non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients for 3 months,
but did not influence other lipid concentrations [26]. In contrast to
our findings, no significant difference in triglycerides levels was
seen among chronic hemodialysis patients following the consumption
of 2 g/day flaxseed oil for 120 days [27]. Omega-3 fatty
acids intake may result in reduced concentrations of triglycerides
and VLDL-cholesterol through modifying cell membrane construction
and action, modulation of lipid mediators as well as fatty
acids gene expression [28].
