Definition
Secondary power source: A secondary power source is an additional source of
electricity that replaces electrical power in the event of an electrical power failure.
Supplier/Facility Action Items
1. Emergency fire alarms must remain operational in the event of electrical power
failure to alert employees of emergencies.
2. Emergency fire alarms must be connected to secondary power sources, such as:
a. Backup batteries included in fire alarm control panel;
b. Connection to emergency generator that automatically activates in the event
of a power outage.
3. Prepare to show auditor secondary power sources for emergency fire alarms.

26. Facility emergency fire alarms:
 Are not connected to a secondary power source;
 Are not inspected every month.

Audit Instructions
1. Sample installed emergency fire alarms.
2. Assess if they are connected to a battery source that has a green or red
light indicating that battery is functional.
Request facility management to report or provide documentation on
duration of battery life.
And
3. If there is no battery source connected to emergency fire alarms, request to
see generator. Assess if generator appears to be plugged in/connected, in
proper operational order, properly maintained, and in automatic mode ready
to function.
Auditors Will Also Report
1. If fire alarms are not connected to a backup battery or generator.
2. If backup battery does not have any light indicating that battery is functional;
and
3. Duration of battery life as reported by facility management or indicated in
documentation.

Definitions
1. High-concentration area: A high-concentration area is an area, in addition to production
floor, area that may house large number of employees. Examples include:
a. Break rooms,
b. Lunch rooms / canteens / cafeterias,
c. Locker rooms,
d. Auditoriums,
e. Prayer areas, and
f. Crèche/childcare facilities.
2. Floor area: A floor area is the length multiplied by the width (length x width) of the room or
production area.
Supplier/Facility Action Items
1. Facilities in Pakistan are required to have a sprinkler or fire hydrant system.
2. Facilities in other countries must follow the legal requirements of their country regarding
the installation and maintenance of sprinkler and fire hydrant systems; and

 Does not have a control panel set to “AUTOMATIC” if there is a fire pump available;
 Does not have a fire hydrant system.

3. This guideline does not require the installation of fire sprinkler systems or fire hydrant systems in
facilities where not required by local rule, regulation, or law. However, the installation of automatic
fire sprinkler systems is RECOMMENDED in all facilities for best protection of life and property, but
is ESPECIALLY recommended in the following types of facilities:
a. Facilities where the floor of an occupiable story is greater than 23 meters (75 feet) above the
lowest level of fire department vehicle access;
b. Facilities over 6,500 square meters (70,000 square feet) on one floor; or
c. Facilities which have high-concentration areas with one of the following characteristics:
i. Floor area that exceeds 1,115 square meters (12,000 square feet);
ii. Floor area that has occupant count above 300 persons; or
iii. Floor area that is located above ground floor.
Audit Instructions
1. Request to see sprinkler or fire hydrant systems, where required. Verify if systems are on and any
fire pump(s) / jockey pump(s) are in the “AUTOMATIC” position.
2. In the absence of legal requirements, recommend to facility management the installation of a fire
sprinkler system if no fire sprinkler system is present and the facility meets one of the conditions
above (as listed in Supplier/Facility Action Items); and
3. Request to see sprinkler control panel and assess whether display states “AUTOMATIC.”
Auditors Will Also Report
Alternative means of fire suppression observed on facility premises.
