Thermophilic aerobic treatment is an emerging technology
that has been foreseen to grow tremendous interests in the near
future. The major reason for this is not the proposed benefits
over mesophilic treatment in general, but indeed the actual need
to purify hot wastewater streams in some industrial sectors. For
example, palm oil mills can use thermophilic anaerobic–aerobic
treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) in order to produce
more biogas, while simultaneously eliminating the cooling facility
as well as reducing the capital cost without compromising the effluent
quality.
