Recent developments
Presently, there are 26 agricultural universities and one horticultural university
situated in different states of India. Agroforestry education was
started formally with the establishment of forestry departments in different
agricultural universities. The first BSc forestry program was started during
1982 at Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi (Bihar). During 1985-86, 13
more agricultural universities became involved in the forestry teaching
program. Agroforestry is only part of the forestry teaching program. The
average intake of students to these programs is about 20 per year (Table 1).
Kerala Agricultural University and Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture
and Forestry, Solan (Nauni), Himachal Pradesh also offer MSc degree
programs in forestry, with an annual intake of four to five students. Recently,
a PhD program in forestry was started at Solan (Nauni).
